Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary

Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary is located in Sandakan, Sabah (island of Borneo). It is a rehabilitation for rescued orang utan from logging sites, poachers and plantations since 1964; and has become one of the major tourists attraction in Sabah.

You can see few orang utan swinging on the trees. In fact, they even made a 'friendly' gesture by throwing branches to visitors. Orang utan are wild if they have less contact to human. Giving them food is not advisable in Sepilok unless you are at the right place under the supervision of their staffs.

The centre opens daily (8.00am-5.00pm) and entrance fee for adult (local) is MYR 5.00 and foreigners MYR 30.00. You will also be charge MYR 10.00 for uses of any type of cameras in the sanctuary.

It is worth it as well to take a journey in the forest of Sepilok. If you are lucky, you might see some other wild animals too. The second photo is a shot of orang utan swinging on the trees (look closely), unfortunately the image was not clear enough.

Drop by to Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary if you are visiting Sabah.

Tropical Sightings

These are more collection of the tropical images you might see in Kenyir Lake. The clear, sunny weather helped a lot in taking these photographs; especially when you're only amateur using the common digital camera!

Kenyir Lake

Kenyir Lake is a place for nature to co-exist with human. Diptrocarp is the major family tree found here. It is commonly known as Meranti and considered as high-quality hardwood tree species. Other plants that commonly spotted are Labisia pumilla (Kacip Fatimah), Cinnamomun iners (Wild Cinnamon), Licuala longipes (Palas) and Melastoma malabathricum (Senduduk). Most of the plants have also been used as an alternative medicine by the villagers.

Currently, the Malaysian Government is planning to develop Kenyir Lake as an ECO-TOURISM spot; including to introduce agriculture plants in one of the island. In the future, Kenyir Lake will not only becoming a fishers favourite spot, but also a place for tourists to gain knowledge on agro-biodiversity and tropical plants. Most existing plants, of course will be preserved throughout the development.

These are some of the amazing images and views of Kenyir Lake that you should not miss if you are visiting Terengganu, Malaysia.

Hopefully, our next generation will have the opportunity to see these images and hundred of years to come if only we make an effort to preserve them like our culture and heritage.
