Hydroponic Planting

Have you heard of Hydroponic? It is a method of planting plants, small shrubs and flowers, fruits and vegetables without using soil, pump, animal fertilizer; and best of all without insecticide.

It's easy and clean method; introduced in Malaysia since in the 1990's. The required materials are safe, cheap and removable. We have bought the materials from a local company, Kazz Marketing .

THE REQUIRED MATERIALS (given when bought) :
  1. 15 centimetre depth of hydroponic pail/sump

  2. a polystyrene cover with holes

  3. small cups with few holes

  4. threads

  5. plants/vegetables seeds

  6. Organic fertilizer

NEXT TO DO :

  1. Pour 20 liter of water into the pail provided and cover it using the polystyrene.
  2. Put a bunch of threads into a cup. Pull some of the threads out of the cup.
  3. Soak the threads with water and put them into the holes on the polystyrene (look at the photo below).
  4. Put 3 nos of seeds into each of the cup.
  5. Coming to the seventh day, pull out 1 of the growing plants. Let 2 nos of plants continue to grow.
  6. On the seventh day, open the cover and you need to add 2 cups of the organic fertilizer. Remember to stir the mixture and close the cover.

You need to mix all of the organic fertilizer given by adding 20 cups (250ml/cup) of water into a different pail and mix them together. Organic fertilizer and 250ml cup is provided. Cover the pail and put in a cool, shade and safe area. Stir the fertilizer before using them.

We have planted Kai-lan or known as Chinese broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra). The above photo showing the progress on the second day of planting the seeds; and 6 days later, the leaves were growing beautifully in the photo respectively. And kept on growing, and growing and growing. But remember to cover them from rainwater.

Make sure the water is enough, but not to cover the white roots as they are the source of 'breathing' for the plants. It is important to check the water level especially during drought season.

As you can see below, the images was taken when the water was finally dried. We have forgotten to check the water level and only realised something gone missing when the leaves were droopy and not fresh. The plants can be harvested after 4 to 6 weeks of planting.

These were the Kai-lan that we have planted using the Hydroponic system. Impressed with the result, we are planning to do it again using other seeds of vegetables. In case you are interested of getting the Hydroponic materials, just let us know.

Tropical Sightings

These are more collection of the tropical images you might see in Kenyir Lake. The clear, sunny weather helped a lot in taking these photographs; especially when you're only amateur using the common digital camera!

Kenyir Lake

Kenyir Lake is a place for nature to co-exist with human. Diptrocarp is the major family tree found here. It is commonly known as Meranti and considered as high-quality hardwood tree species. Other plants that commonly spotted are Labisia pumilla (Kacip Fatimah), Cinnamomun iners (Wild Cinnamon), Licuala longipes (Palas) and Melastoma malabathricum (Senduduk). Most of the plants have also been used as an alternative medicine by the villagers.

Currently, the Malaysian Government is planning to develop Kenyir Lake as an ECO-TOURISM spot; including to introduce agriculture plants in one of the island. In the future, Kenyir Lake will not only becoming a fishers favourite spot, but also a place for tourists to gain knowledge on agro-biodiversity and tropical plants. Most existing plants, of course will be preserved throughout the development.

These are some of the amazing images and views of Kenyir Lake that you should not miss if you are visiting Terengganu, Malaysia.

Hopefully, our next generation will have the opportunity to see these images and hundred of years to come if only we make an effort to preserve them like our culture and heritage.

Kenyir Lake, Terengganu, Malaysia

Located in the east-coast of Malaysia, Terengganu is one of Malaysia tourists attraction famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, culture and foods. Apart from that, Terengganu also known for the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia, Tasik Kenyir or Kenyir Lake. It is covered by more than 340 islands; and the biggest island would be estimated as big as Singapore.

Kenyir Lake got its name from one of the river known as Kenyir River; however the river is beneath the lake when Kenyir Lake filled by the rainfall and other water sources. The above photo was taken early in the morning. You can see the wonderful sight of fog covering the hills.

The reflection of the water is amazing; clear and serene. The lake is known for its uniqueness and beautiful scenario of tropical forest; among the world’s oldest tropical rain forest in Malaysia. It is the habitat of more than 8000 species of flowers, 2500 species of plants and trees, 8000 species of orchids, 300 species of fresh water fish and 370 species of birds. Definitely a good place for nature lovers.

The flora and fauna flourishes in the forest and preserved to stay for you to discover and enjoy. A tranquil place to see hundreds species of wildlife, exotic birds, fish and fauna.

The four photos respectively was taken at a guesthouse only for government officers. The implementation of traditional Terengganu architecture can be seen clearly on the rooftop. Traditional motive on the eaves of the wooden jetty is commonly found in the traditional buildings in Terengganu; and cannot be found in the other states in Malaysia

Found in Bangkok

This photo was taken at a nursery in Bangkok. They have designed this creative hut for visitors to rest and experience nature by planting creepers on the roof. You don't need expensive materials to built the hut. Creating the natural, serene ambience is much important. Visitors can just sit under the shade and enjoy the view.

If you look closely on the left side of this photo, they even hang a bird's nest which can be found in the tropical forest. While the wooden chair give a rustic image and looks cozy.

The below photo was at a scene of a market place selling plants. The price are just OK and they are selling variety of species, not only tropical plants. In the photo, you can see shrubs called Adenium obesum, with bulky trunk.

They produce pinkish and white flowers; also come with variegated leaves. Usually planted in the pot, not on the ground and believed by the Chinese to bring prosperity. Beautiful outdoor plants and preferable for landscaping at home.
